- Using the UN Sustainability Literacy Test Cormac MacMahon Introduction Ever since Brundtland recognised the challenge to humanity in meeting its present needs without compromising future generations [1] , higher education has played a role in ensuring that its graduates emerge as leaders in sustainability [2]. Yet, population proliferation and technological advances have brought humans unprecedented capacity to alter the natural environment [3]. With emerging consensus on an urgent need to address the potentially catastrophic issues of climate change, biodiversity loss and threats to the natural world, Generation Z is elevating the UN sustainable development goals Fig. Solutions most likely derive from requiring innovative interdisciplinary approaches.
- Undoing a deep-rooted Western ideology of exploitation for economic growth requires transformative learning in which students question their worldviews. This chapter reviews the application of the Sulitest to raise awareness among students in an interdisciplinary summer school. The test is an open-access online assessment tool, developed, aimed at developing sustainability literate graduates [5]. This chapter outlines how the SULITEST tool works, explores the benefits and feedback that the summer school students received from undertaking the test providing a mechanism to expose students to the broad and complex nature of super-wicked problems [6] [7]. It reflects what the UN believes to be an appropriate level of knowledge in social, economic and environmental responsibility for higher education students. To discuss the state of sustainability education at business schools today—and how the online tool can shape the conversation—BizEd spoke with Jean-Christophe Carteron, CSR director at Kedge Business School and president of the Sulitest Association. For a long time, higher education institutions have had committed teachers, administrators, and students who have tried to make sure that we train more responsible managers. Unfortunately, in most of those institutions, those people have had neither the recognition nor the means to act effectively. It was there that the academic community recognized its responsibility—though not its guilt— in the behavior of its alumni, and consequently recognized the need to introduce notions of sustainability into its activities.- There is one real challenge: to ensure that all students, not just a few committed activists, are properly equipped to make informed decisions. We have to train people to integrate into their daily decisions the notions of long-term vision and overall performance, including social performance. And we cannot wait for our current students to rise in the hierarchy. The majority of the crises facing humanity and the planet are the result of human decisions, mostly made in a professional context by well-educated people. Therefore, business schools must consider how to integrate sustainability into all of their executive education modules—whatever the topic. When we ask all of our students to take the Sulitest as soon as they arrive on campus, we get an amazing snapshot of their awareness, and we can adapt our actions to and around the classroom. At Kedge Business School, for instance, some professors have developed their own sets of questions so they can better understand where their students stand on certain topics such as marketing, finance, and supply chain management.

Increasing population growth, overexploitation of ecosystems, increasing frequencies of natural hazards, and the production and consumption of non-renewable resources are all factors leading to increased interest in global sustainability and sustainable development. Higher education plays an important role in exposing students to alternative thoughts on a wide variety of controversial and important subjects that spur debate, and may lead to a more civil world; more fair in its policies of governance and the distribution of resources among inhabitants. Globally many higher education institutions HEIs have created opportunities for diffusing knowledge, values, attitudes and behaviors that favor sustainability. HEIs, as organizations, have also begun integrating sustainability into their mission and vision statements, and further demonstrated their dedication toward advancing sustainability through strategic organizational planning processes, targeted investments in sustainability initiatives, and embedding sustainability frameworks into organizational values as a guide for decision-makers.
